rock-astronaut-in-bloom-cartoni-animati
Rock Astronaut in Bloom | Cartoni Animati | Yuri Catania, 2025

Unique work by Yuri Catania from the collection Yuri in Wonderland, series Cartoni Animati, 2025. Mixed media, 161 × 161 × 5 cm, mounted on Alu-Dibond, hand-signed, with certificate of authenticity.

In Rock Astronaut in Bloom a full-length astronaut, in black and white, stands at the centre of a floral explosion: blue cornflowers, white daisies, pink and fuchsia blooms, lime-green leaves radiate around the suit on a cardboard-coloured ground left bare. In the visor another astronaut is reflected, small, with his spacecraft. The paint is applied in broad touches and splashes, with blue and pink drips cutting diagonally across the flowers. The figure stays still, hands gathered in front, while everything around it blooms: it is a portrait of calm in the midst of vitality. The large square format gives the bouquet the scale of a flowerbed. The cardboard is mounted on aluminium Dibond, with a wooden back frame.

The work belongs to the Cartoni Animati series of Yuri Catania's Yuri in Wonderland collection: works made directly on cardboard, the poorest and most everyday of supports, with its folds, staples and imperfections left in view. The name plays on a double meaning: in Italian cartoni animati means cartoons, but these are cardboards (cartoni) animated by colour. As in the whole collection, painting, photography and technology merge into a single language, and the astronaut is the figure through whom the artist reflects on the relationship between humans, nature and the digital world.

The sidereal dimension meets the intimate one of the artist's garden in Rovio, at the foot of Monte Generoso: flowers, moon and butterflies bear witness to one of the most precious and fragile biodiversities of the region.

Each work is conceived to be experienced. Under the UV torch supplied, hidden colours and details emerge, visible at the same frequency at which insects perceive them on flowers. With augmented reality, framing the work with a smartphone, the image comes to life in an experience of sounds and visions created by the artist. UV fluorescent pigments: the work reveals itself in the dark with the UV torch supplied with the work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0976/6007/6356/files/fronte_dce83b58-acd2-4f32-9306-3e347ae6b93c.jpg?v=1788040225
